Season Four begins with Dean awakening dazed and confused in a grave, having been rescued by an angel named Castiel on orders from God. Sam has further developed his abilities with the help of Ruby during the four months that Dean has been dead. It is soon revealed that Dean was revived to help stop Lilith's plan of breaking the 66 seals, which would let Lucifer walk free once again. In the season finale Sam kills Lilith, but her murder is the final seal. The angels also wanted the seals to be broken, because when Dean defeats Lucifer, they can usher in paradise on Earth. Ruby reveals she has been manipulating Sam since they first met, and Dean kills her in revenge. With Sam having killed Lilith, and ultimately breaking the final seal, Lucifer is now free. The fifth season pinpoints on Lucifer and the signs of the upcoming Apocalypse.

The Watcher: ‘Supernatural’ has evolved beyond angels and demons

The first half of “Supernatural’s” debut season gave few indications of what the show would become.

Back in 2005, as is the case now, there were monsters, ghouls and demons on the prowl. Two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles), would go from city to city in their 1967 Impala and hunt these otherworldly critters down, frequently quipping along the way.

But creator Eric Kripke is well aware that “Supernatural,” which returns for its fifth season at 8 p.m. Thursday on WGN-Ch. 9, has evolved far beyond the idea he pitched several years ago.

Comic-Con: CW Thursdays – Hot Brothers Night?

Something felt different about Supernatural at this year’s Comic-Con. Yes, show leads Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) and Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) weren’t there, with Misha Collins (Castiel) and Jim Beaver (Bobby Singer) in their place, but that wasn’t it. Sure, creator Eric Kripke, and executive producers Sera Gamble and Ben Edlund were there for the third year in a row delivering enticing teasers for the new season, but that was nothing new either. Neither was the massive line of fans winding outside ready to pack the large 6BCF ballroom. If anything, Supernatural’s popular presence at the con (along with Smallville) warranted a larger room.

No, this year Supernatural established that it’s no longer the show that could. It’s now the show that did. Welcome to the status of established veteran.

Supernatural Plans for the Apocalypse

How the show will depict Lucifer (and God!), and whether the show could continue past Season 5.

July 29, 2009 – Supernatural is going big this year, as Sam and Dean Winchester are going to be taking on the Apocalypse, not to mention Lucifer himself. This past weekend at Comic-Con, IGN spoke to Executive Producers Eric Kripke (also the series creator), Sera Gamble and Ben Edlund about the new season, along with cast members Misha Collins (”Castiel”) and Jim Beaver (”Bobby Singer”).

Kripke said that for Season 5, “It’s the Apocalypse. We’re not pulling our punches. We’re not promising the apocalypse and then saying, ‘Oh wait, we’re going to hedge our bets when you come back after the cliffhanger,’ and not really. It’s the full on End of Days, out of the Book of Revelation Apocalypse.” Though Kripke adds with a laugh, “For budgetary reasons, much of it happens off camera. We’ve been referring to it as the Wal-Mart apocalypse. But there’s horseman and there’s the devil and there’s God and comets named Wormwood and the whole deal.”
